The cross
The cross is a timeless geometric symbol formed by two intersecting lines, traditionally positioned vertically and horizontally. When the lines appear diagonally, the design is known as a saltire, though the arms do not always meet at right angles.
The cross is one of the most ancient and recognizable symbols in human history and is especially significant within Christianity.
The word cross originates from the Latin word *crux*, the Roman instrument used for crucifixion. The term entered the English language in the 10th century to describe the instrument used in the execution of Jesus as recorded in the New Testament, eventually replacing the earlier English word *rood*. The term *crux* may also have Phoenician origins.
According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the concept of the cross is also associated with the Latin word *curio*, meaning “to torment.”
Even before 2000 B.C., the cross symbol † appeared in ancient alphabets such as Paleo-Hebrew, Canaanite, and Phoenician where it represented the letter “T” and the meaning “mark.” In early usage within the Torah it symbolized a mark or sign. The design may have originated from two crossed sticks used to mark a location, similar to Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The use of the cross as a Christian symbol dates back to the early centuries of Christianity.
Many variations of cross designs appeared during the age of the Crusades and were widely used in heraldry and religious art.
By around 200 A.D., the cross had become widely recognized as a symbol of Christian faith.
Today, the cross remains the central symbol of Christianity and is used for prayer, devotion, and spiritual reflection.
