Historic Site of the Banias
Banias is one of the most historically significant sites in the Holy Land and is known as the source of the Jordan River. For centuries, this sacred location held religious importance. In ancient times the area was dedicated to the worship of Ba’al, and during the Hellenistic period a cave at the site became associated with the Greek god Pan. The name “Banias” is believed to be derived from the Greek word “Panias,” referring to Pan. Around the 3rd century BC the area served as the center of the Paneas cult where offerings and sacrifices were presented on altars near the cave. Visitors today can still see the famous Cave of Pan and the carved niches in the rock that once held statues of ancient deities. When Herod the Great annexed the region in 20 BC, he built a magnificent white marble temple at the site, the remains of which can still be seen today.
A few years later, in 3 BC, Herod’s son Philip established a city here named Caesarea Paneas, later known as Caesarea Philippi. This city is referenced in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark and is also mentioned in the Jewish Talmud and Mishnah. In the 12th century, Crusaders constructed a fortress known as Qa’l’at al-Subayba to defend the strategic region and fought many battles for control of the city. Eventually, the area passed into Muslim rule and became a small village, preserving its remarkable historical legacy.
These sacred elements carry deep spiritual significance for Christians around the world. The Olive Oil represents anointing and healing as mentioned in scripture (Mark 6:13). The Earth from Bethlehem symbolizes the holiness of the Holy Land (Mark 4:8). Water of the Jordan represents the sacred meaning of baptism (1 Corinthians 12:13).
