The Church of the Nativity - Bethlehem
Holy land Gift Pack- Jordan River Water , Jerusalem's Stones and Galilee Olive Oil
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judah in the days of Herod the king, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem , saying, "where is he who has been born king of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the East and have come to worship him"
When Herod the king heard this , he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
So they said to him , "In Bethlehem of Judah , for thus it is written by the prophet: 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rules of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler who will shepherd my people Israel". (Matthew 2, 1-6)
The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in the world and one of Christianity’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. The first church was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD and constructed above the grotto believed to be the exact location where Mary gave birth to Jesus. Constantine and his mother Helena built a magnificent church decorated with beautiful marble columns and intricate mosaics, creating a place of deep spiritual significance that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
The main entrance to the Church of the Nativity, known today as the “Door of Humility,” was gradually lowered and narrowed over time to protect the church from invaders. From inside the basilica, two staircases lead down to the sacred Grotto of the Nativity. A fourteen-point silver star marks the traditional location of Christ’s birth with the inscription: “Hic de Virgin Maria Jesus Christus Natus Est,” meaning “Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary.” Today the church is jointly administered by three Christian denominations: the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian churches.
These sacred elements carry deep spiritual significance for Christians around the world. The Olive Oil represents anointing and healing as mentioned in scripture (Mark 6:13). The Earth from Bethlehem reflects the holiness of the Holy Land (Mark 4:8). Water of the Jordan symbolizes the spiritual meaning of baptism (1 Corinthians 12:13)
